If you think you’re seeing more ads for productivity apps or technology brands while binge watching your favorite shows, you are. At least that’s the case according to agency execs, who say B2B marketers are more willing to take a page out of B2C marketers’ playbook over the last year, showing up in consumer-facing spaces like TikTok and streaming ads with emotive and sometimes humorous spots.

Today’s marketing landscape is more fragmented than ever. Like consumer brands, business brands are looking to stand out in a crowded and competitive marketplace.

“All of those things, the best B2C brands were doing, but it hadn’t really hit B2B yet. There was a sense that B2B just worked different,” said Jared Gruner, head of strategy at Ogilvy California, later adding, “I’m B2B, but I’m not just competing with other enterprise software brands. I’m competing with your vacation, I’m competing with politics, I’m competing with your friends.”

The line between business marketing and consumer marketing is beginning to blur. In response, agency execs say they’re encouraging B2B marketers to rewrite the playbook to include a more robust media mix and beef up the brand ethos or narrative with storytelling, by spending more on brand awareness efforts on TikTok or in streaming ads.

TikTok rival Triller to merge with NASDAQ-listed AGBA, creating $4 billion social media and financial services company

Financially troubled social media app and TikTok competitor Triller is merging with a Hong Kong financial services company to create a $4 billion company that will have its hands in social video, content generation, wealth management, and fintech.

The move could help Triller overcome recent financial difficulties and compete with TikTok at a time when the ByteDance-owned short video app is under pressure from lawmakers in the US, and mired in a licensing dispute with Universal Music Group.

Triller, which began in 2015 as a music video creation tool, and evolved into a music-focused video platform that is often described as a TikTok competitor, announced on Thursday (April 18) that it’s merging with AGBA, a NASDAQ-listed financial services company that operates primarily in Hong Kong.

Under the terms of the all-stock merger, Triller shareholders will own 80% of the new AGBA Group Holding Ltd., while current AGBA shareholders will own the remaining 20%.

According to the announcement, the deal valuates Triller at USD $3.2 billion (considerably less than earlier estimates of $5 billion) and AGBA at $800 million, giving the combined company a pro-forma value of $4 billion.

AGBA says the merger has been approved by both companies’ boards, but is “subject to regulatory and stockholder approvals” and other closing conditions.

“This groundbreaking merger combines AGBA’s financial expertise with Triller’s cutting-edge AI-driven content creation and SaaS capabilities, aiming to transform global digital ecosystems,” AGBA said in a statement issued Thursday (April 18).

“By strategically integrating AGBA’s financial services expertise with Triller’s innovative suite of AI-driven digital content and SaaS offerings, this merger establishes new benchmarks in the convergence of technology, finance, and media.”

Palantir is pitching ad agencies on its AI technology

Palantir, the controversial software company with ties to intelligence agencies, is turning to the agency world as part of its continued efforts to grow its commercial business.

The company, which was co-founded by venture capitalist Peter Thiel, has pitched advertising agencies on utilizing its year-old AI platform AIP, according to two executives from different agencies who attended pitches.

In a pitch deck shared with Marketing Brew, Palantir presents “wide-ranging use cases and applications” of AIP for tasks including “pricing and inventory planning,” “programmatic sales,” and “campaign optimization.”

Palantir, which received early funding from the CIA, describes itself in the pitch deck as a builder of “leading software platforms for data-driven operations and decision-making.” Over the years, it’s become known for—and faced criticism over—its work with intelligence agencies, including with US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, which human-rights organizations have raised concerns about.

That hasn’t stopped big-name brands from using Palantir’s software. In 2018, Palantir announced a “strategic relationship” with United Airlines centered around data organization, and Tyson Foods has used Palantir to help with trucking logistics. Other clients include Anheuser-Busch, Molson Coors, Hertz, ExxonMobil and Phillips, per the pitch deck. When it comes to AIP in particular, Lowe’s, General Mills and OpenAI are all using the technology, according to a press release from March.

Now the company is turning to the industry’s middlemen: media agencies, which are largely responsible for planning, organizing, and buying advertisements on behalf of major brands.

In an email, Palantir spokesperson Rita Devlin Marier told Marketing Brew that the company does not comment on “current or potential sales prospects.”
