Notably, electronics, wireless (in the U.S.) and transit are now eligible to earn the highest rewards rate on the card.

  • Transit purchases, including trains, taxis, rideshare services, ferries, tolls, parking, buses and subways.

With the increased elevated rewards structure and the additional benefits we’ll discuss below, it’s easy to see why the Amex Business Gold card tops our list of the best American Express business cards.

Service and protection benefits

The updated Amex Business Gold card offers a valuable new benefit: Cell phone protection¹. Cardholders can be reimbursed for repair or replacement costs (whichever is less) following damage or theft. There’s an $800 per claim maximum, and your prior month’s wireless bill must be paid using your Amex Business Gold card to be eligible. A $50 deductible will apply to each approved claim with a limit of two approved claims per 12-month period. Additional terms and conditions apply.

Other service and protection benefits offered on the Amex Business Gold card include:

  • Pay Over Time: Help manage cash flow with the ability to carry a balance (with interest) up to your Pay Over Time Limit on eligible purchases. The APR is a 19.49% to 27.49% variable APR.
  • Purchase protection²: Get reimbursed or receive a replacement for any eligible items purchased with your Amex Business Gold card that are stolen or accidentally damaged — up to $1,000 per occurrence and up to $50,000 per calendar year. Eligibility and benefit level varies by card. Terms, conditions and limitations apply.
  • Extended warranty³: Receive up to an additional year of coverage on eligible U.S. manufacturer’s warranties lasting five years or less. Each claim is covered up to $10,000 (maximum $50,000 per card member account per calendar year). Eligibility and benefit level varies by card. Terms, conditions and limitations apply.

Travel benefits

Cardholders now have the potential to score more points on travel at an elevated rate on flights and prepaid hotels booked through AmexTravel.com. Prior to the refresh, cardholders could earn 2 points per $1 for travel booked this way (if it wasn’t a top spending category for your business). This enhanced rate rivals some of the best travel rewards cards on the market today. Plus, with the new rewards structure, travel booked this way is not subject to the $150,000 annual spending cap.

If you book a hotel room via The Hotel Collection with American Express Travel you’ll get benefits at participating properties when you stay at least two consecutive nights — including a $100 experience credit to spend on qualifying dining, spa and resort activities (experience credit varies by property) and a room upgrade upon check-in only, when available. Certain room categories are not eligible for upgrade.

You’ll also have access to the following travel protections:

  • Baggage insurance plan: Purchase your ticket with the Amex Business Gold card and get coverage for lost, damaged or stolen baggage for up to $1,250 for carry-on baggage and $500 for checked baggage. New York state residents are subject to a $10,000 aggregate maximum for all covered people on a trip. Eligibility and benefit level varies by Card. Terms, conditions and limitations apply.
  • Car rental loss and damage insurance: Provides secondary coverage when renting an eligible vehicle with your Business Gold card and declining the rental company’s insurance.
  • Trip delay insurance⁶: If you’re on a round-trip ticket and your trip is delayed for more than 12 hours for an eligible reason, this benefit may provide coverage up to $300.
  • Global Assist Hotline⁷: Available 24 hours a day, seven days a week for medical, legal, financial or other select emergency coordination and assistance services while traveling more than 100 miles from home. Third-party service costs may be your responsibility. Eligibility and Benefit level varies by Card. Terms, Conditions and Limitations Apply.

In addition to these benefits, Amex Business Gold cardholders don’t have to worry about foreign transaction fees, as American Express waives these charges when you use your card to make purchases outside of the U.S.

Business benefits

The Amex Business Gold card offers business benefits including:

  • Statement credits of up to $20 per month. Get up to $240 per year (enrollment required) in statement credits for eligible purchases at FedEx, Grubhub, and office supply stores.
  • A Walmart+ membership credit. Pay for a monthly Walmart+ membership (subject to auto-renewal) and get a statement credit that covers the monthly cost, up to $155 annually. This perk allows business owners to take advantage of the perks of Walmart+, like free shipping on all orders and savings on fuel at select gas stations. Enrollment required.
  • Sync with QuickBooks. Streamline bookkeeping and enroll to have your card transactions automatically tagged with your QuickBooks categories.

Entertainment and dining benefits

While Amex doesn’t market it as a specific entertainment benefit of the Amex Business Gold card, you should know if you enroll in the monthly statement credit and sign up for a Walmart+ membership, you can also access the Paramount+ streaming service as it’s included in all Walmart+ memberships.

Although the Amex Business Gold doesn’t offer as many dining statement credits as the personal version of this card, the American Express® Gold Card (terms apply, rates & fees), it does offer up to $20 in flexible statement credits each month (up to $240 per year) for eligible purchases — which includes spending with Grubhub.

Plus, if U.S. purchases at restaurants, including takeout and delivery, are one of your top two spending categories, you’ll earn elevated rewards on this spending (up to the annual spending cap on the card’s top rewards rate).

How to maximize your Amex Business Gold benefits

The easiest way to maximize points potential with any new credit card is to meet the minimum spending requirements to earn a welcome bonus. The Amex Business Gold card offers 4 Membership Rewards points per $1 on up to $150,000 in combined purchases each calendar year on the 2 select categories your business spends the most each month, 3 points per $1 on flights and prepaid hotels booked on amextravel.com and 1 point per $1 for other purchases.

For ongoing spend, be sure to prioritize using the card for spending that falls within the card’s flexible bonus spending categories. If you can maximize the bonus categories up to the $150,000 spending cap every calendar year, you’ll earn a fat 600,000 Memberships Rewards points on that spending.

Additionally, enroll your card in the statement credit offers for the up to $240 in annual flexible business statement credits the card offers. After enrollment, you can earn up to $20 in monthly statement credits for eligible purchases at FedEx, Grubhub, and office supply stores.

The Walmart+ membership credit that comes with the updated Amex Business Gold card is another valuable perk for business owners who can benefit from the fuel discounts and free shipping that come with membership.

If fully utilized, the statement credits and Walmart+ membership credit can significantly reduce the bite of the card’s $295 ($375 if application is received on or after 2/1/24) annual fee.

You should also look out for any relevant Amex Offers that pop up in your Amex online account or mobile app. These are targeted offers, but once registered, you can receive cash discounts on popular items and services as a statement credit to lower your card balance.
