2023 wasn’t exactly business as usual.

An economy grappling with high interest rates and inflation meant plenty of businesses had to buckle down. Several major US companies made deep job cuts in the first half of the year.

Employee-employer relations took center stage, as unions for auto workers, UPS drivers, and Hollywood writers and actors went on strike. A broader conversation about the efficacy of the 40-hour workweek — and ways to upend it to improve workers’ happiness — also took place.

The ties between universities and businesses garnered attention in 2023 following Hamas’ attacks on Israel. Some executives’ anger over universities’ responses to the war highlighted the tension between Wall Street and the elite institutions.

I asked Shona Ghosh, Business Insider’s deputy executive editor for business in the UK, for five of the top stories from her team. Check them out below, along with some thoughts from Shona about what made them stand out.

Cost of living – latest updates: Supermarket to ‘lovebomb’ shoplifters; house prices fall at fastest rate in 12 years | UK News

The excitement of getting away from it all when booking a holiday means travel insurance can sometimes become an afterthought.

But the policy could end up saving you a mountain of stress if the worst were to happen on your trip.

A poll of 800 claimants by consumer champion Which? reveals the most common types of travel insurance claim:

Medical costs

The highest proportion of claims made by travellers in the past two years have been for medical cover, Which? found.

Holidaymakers can benefit from protection under the Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) scheme when travelling to many European countries – this means you can get emergency treatment at no higher cost than if you were a resident.

Costs covered by insurance may also include travel between hospitals or back to the UK where needed.

Cancellation

Cancellation cover was close behind medical costs, at 27% of claims.

Insurers could reimburse you if you have to suddenly cancel your journey before you go, depending on the reason.

This element of travel insurance is why it’s important to find a policy that works for you as soon as you book the holiday – but check that the cancellation cover offered is right for your trip.

Transport delays

A holiday affected by transport delays could be grounds for an insurance claim – with most policies offering some cover for this reason.

The poll by Which? found that 25% of claimants surveyed used this feature.

Delay cover can be for the cost of reimbursing food and accommodation costs while waiting for transport issues to be sorted, or “missed departure” cover.

Not all insurers will offer this however – so check the small print.

Lost possessions

Some 21% of claimants made a claim after their luggage was lost.

The vast majority of insurers offer cover

Bar marketing of harmful foods for children: WHO | Latest News India

Countries must prohibit the targeting of young children in advertising products like chips and aerated drinks, according to new guidelines by the World Health Organization, which found that food marketing around the world negatively affects children’s diets.

HT Image

The global health body issued a new document on Monday, which called for mandatory policies to protect children of all ages from the marketing of foods and non-alcoholic beverages that are high in saturated fatty acids, trans-fatty acids, free sugars and salt – also known as HFSS foods.

“The updated recommendation is based on the findings of reviews of recent evidence, including how exposure to and the power of food marketing affects children’s health, eating behaviours, and food-related attitudes and beliefs. In short, food marketing remains a threat to public health and continues to negatively affect children’s food choices, intended choices and their dietary intake. It also negatively influences the development of children’s norms about food consumption,” a statement released by WHO read.

HFSS products include chips, cookies, chocolates, confectionaries and deep-fried foods.

The global health body stressed that over a decade ago, in 2010, member states had endorsed WHO’s recommendations on the marketing of foods and non-alcoholic beverages to children but children continued to be exposed to powerful marketing of HFSS foods and non-alcoholic beverages, consumption of which is associated with negative health effects.

These policies will be most effective “if they are: are mandatory; protect children of all ages; use a government-led nutrient profile model to classify foods to be restricted from marketing; and are sufficiently comprehensive to minimise the risk of migration of marketing to other age groups, other spaces within the same medium or to other media, including digital spaces,” the statement added.

“Aggressive and pervasive marketing of foods and beverages high in fats, sugars and salt

Most popular newspapers in the UK: Latest print ABC circulations

Print circulation decline continued across the board at the UK’s national newspapers in April.

The biggest drop among paid-for nationals was at the Sunday People, down 22% to 69,990. London’s free Evening Standard, however, saw a greater fall of 31% to 311,216.

The smallest decline was at the FT, which dropped 2% year-on-year to an average monthly circulation of 109,637. It is the only ABC-audited newspaper to distribute a significant number of bulk free copies at locations such as airports and hotels as part of its circulation, but these fell by 9% so the smaller decline cannot be attributed to that portion of its circulation.

The only newspapers to grow by 1% between March and April were the Daily Mirror and the free City AM. The biggest month-on-month drop was of 3% at the Sunday People.
